Safeguarding Policy
Most people who learn on Kallos are children. Keeping them safe comes before everything else we do.
Our Designated Safeguarding Lead
Michelle Chukwuma is Kallos's Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), contactable at safeguarding@kallostutoring.co.uk and [phone]. The DSL is responsible for this policy, for responding to every concern, and for referring to the police or local authority where needed.
If a child is in immediate danger, call 999.
Reporting a concern
Anyone — a student, a parent or a tutor — can report a concern in one click from any lesson page or conversation. The report goes straight to the DSL by email, and is recorded.
You don't need to be certain something is wrong. If something worries you, report it.
How we vet tutors
Before any tutor is allocated a student, they must have:
- passed a structured interview, including a live teaching exercise;
- an Enhanced DBS check with a check of the children's Barred List, which Kallos applies for and pays for;
- joined the DBS Update Service, which we check regularly;
- confirmed their right to work in the UK;
- completed safeguarding training;
- agreed to this policy and the Code of Conduct;
- done a practice session in the lesson room with a member of our team.
We review the first three real lessons of every new tutor.
Safeguards built into Kallos
- Lessons with a student under 18 are recorded, and recordings can be watched by the student, their parents or guardians and Kallos staff.
- All messages between tutors and students can be read by parents and by Kallos staff. Tutors and students may only communicate through Kallos.
- A Kallos administrator can join any lesson, and will always be visible when they do.
- A student under 16 can't use Kallos until a parent or guardian has confirmed their account.
- We keep a permanent log of significant actions taken by staff.
- Records relevant to a safeguarding concern are never automatically deleted.
What tutors must do
A tutor who has a concern about a student's welfare, or who receives a disclosure, must report it to the DSL the same day, and must not investigate it themselves or promise to keep it secret.
Full expectations for tutors are in the Code of Conduct.
Allegations against a tutor
If a concern is raised about a tutor, the DSL will act immediately. This can include suspending the tutor's access while the concern is looked into, and referring to the Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO) and, where required, the DBS.
Review
This policy is reviewed at least once a year, and after any serious incident.
